How to start a data reselling business in Nigeria

Data reselling has one of the lowest entry costs of any business in Nigeria. You can start with ₦1,000, you need no shop, and you carry no stock. Here is exactly how it works and what the margins look like.

Everyone around you buys data every month. Reselling simply means you buy that data in bulk at a discounted rate and sell it on at your own price, keeping the difference. The only things standing between most people and their first sale are a funded wallet and a price list.

What data reselling actually is

Data reselling is the business of buying mobile data in large volumes at wholesale rates, then selling it to end users in smaller quantities at a markup. It is the same model as the person selling recharge cards on the street, except nothing is printed and nothing is carried.

Buying directly through a vending platform is cheaper than buying through a bank app or a retail agent, because you buy at the rate resellers get rather than the rate consumers get. In Nigeria that covers MTN, Airtel, Glo and 9mobile.

The core idea

Your profit is the gap between the reseller rate you pay and the price you charge. Nothing else. Every decision in this business is about widening that gap or making more sales inside it.

How much capital you need

Less than most people assume. You do not need ₦50,000 or ₦100,000 to begin. A wallet funded with ₦1,000 is enough to buy your first few gigabytes and start turning them over. As sales grow, you fund more, and the same margin applies to a larger volume.

Beyond capital, the requirements are short:

  • A smartphone or PC with internet access, which you clearly already have.
  • A payment method, either a bank card or a mobile banking app.
  • A VTUking account, which is free to create.

There is no business registration requirement, no licence, and no minimum volume. You can resell as an individual from the day you sign up.

Starting, step by step

  1. Download the app. Get VTUking from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store, then create an account with your name, email and phone number.
  2. Fund your wallet. Use bank transfer or card. Automated funding reflects instantly, so you can trade the same minute.
  3. Open the data menu and buy. Pick the network, pick the plan, enter the number you are crediting, and confirm. Delivery is automatic.
  4. Set your price. Look at what people around you currently pay, then price slightly under it. Undercutting the retail rate is the whole pitch.
  5. Sell to people who already know you. Classmates, colleagues, family, your WhatsApp status, your Instagram. Your first fifty customers are people you can already reach for free.

What the margins look like

Take a real example. You buy a gigabyte at the reseller rate and sell it at the price your customers are used to paying. On a plan bought at ₦330 and sold at ₦550, you keep ₦220 per transaction.

Ten transactions a day is ₦2,200 a day, which is roughly ₦66,000 across a month. Sell at ₦600 instead and the same ten daily transactions produce about ₦81,000. The maths is not complicated, and it scales with customer count rather than with capital.

Margins vary by network and plan, and rates move. The point is not a fixed number, it is that the gap is yours to set.

Worth knowing

Data is not the only product in the wallet. The same balance pays DSTV, GOTV and StarTimes subscriptions, buys prepaid electricity tokens for the major discos, and covers WAEC scratch cards. Customers who trust you for data will pay you to handle those too.

Finding customers without spending on ads

You do not need an advertising budget. You need people who already buy data, and a reason to buy it from you instead of the bank app.

  • Start with proximity. A hostel, an office, a compound or a market row is a customer base that already talks to itself.
  • Post your price list. A clear list of plans and prices on WhatsApp status or Instagram does more work than any advert.
  • Deliver fast, every time. Automated delivery is your competitive advantage. Use it. People return to the seller whose data lands in seconds.
  • Run a small promo to open. A short introductory price gets the first transactions moving, and the first transactions are what create word of mouth.

Mistakes that cost new resellers money

  • Not checking the number before confirming. Most VTU purchases deliver instantly and cannot be reversed. Read the number back before you tap confirm.
  • Pricing on feel. Know your buy rate on every plan you sell. If you do not know the margin, you do not have one.
  • Giving credit. Sell for payment received. Informal credit is how small vending businesses quietly run out of working capital.
  • Ignoring the receipt. Every transaction has a reference. Keeping them is how disputes get resolved in your favour.

Where to go next

If the maths above is what interests you, the earnings page works through the numbers in more detail, including how monthly profit changes with volume and margin. If you are ready to trade, the app takes about five minutes to set up.
